28/09/08 Sydney BJJ Challenge Wrap Up

On Sunday 28th September 2008 at the Five Dock Sports and Leisure Centre, Events BJJ put on their first competition attracting 205 competitors from 25 schools representing 6 teams. It was a fantastic turnout for their first tournament.

The Events BJJ organisers had taken their years of experience in competition (both in running and competing in them) as well as feedback from many competitors in setting up Events BJJ. They wanted to make the competition as easy and enjoyable as possible for the competitors. Events BJJ decided to move ahead from what was expected and started incorporating what was wanted.

The first step was to introduce online entries. This made it much easier to get yourself registered. Next was to have the draws online the night before the event. This allowed the competitors to check out their divisions. Events BJJ also set a schedule and starting time for each of the divisions as well as which mat they would be on. This allowed the competitors to know in advance what time they needed to be there and which mat they had to go to. All this information was also posted on the walls for those who had not gotten around to checking it out online the night before.  All the extra organisation and preparation allowed the event to run smoothly making it an enjoyable day for all.  The tournament started at 9.15am and finished at 2.15pm followed by a presentation.

The day started with Kids at 9.15am. It was a great turnout with lots of kids in all age divisions, 8-10yrs, 11-13yrs, 14-15yrs and the Teens 16-17yrs. Well done to Tyler TeWhata who tore through the largest kids division. A special mention goes out to Stefan Sutton for some great submissions totalling less than 10secs over two matches to win his division. It was great to see the future of Australian BJJ in action. Trophy presentations were made before the adults divisions commenced.

Next up at 11.15am were the white belt adults divisions. The biggest divisions are always the white belts. They turn up in droves and are always excited to compete. It’s always great to see them all striving towards victory and trying to make an impression in the lead up to their first belt promotion to blue belt.  Keep an eye out for the following white belts that made a strong impression in their divisions, Daniel Perica, Justin Packman (winner of the largest white belt division) and Shaher Khan.

Next up were the coloured belts with masters/seniors as well as the female division which started just after 1pm. It was good to see the women’s division get some competitors, well done to Nicole Griffiths on her victory. Hopefully at the next event more will turn up making a bigger day of it. It’s always great to see the coloured belts compete from Blue to Brown, showing the lower ranks what they can look forward to in the future. There were some great competitive matches and displays of technical ability, well done to the following competitors who put on a great display, David Brooksbank, Ben Mallia and Julio Guerra . It’s awesome to see Australian BJJ doing so well.

Check out the Events BJJ website for all the results and photos, at www.eventsbjj.com. The tournament organisers Anthony Lange, Steve Perceval, Anthony Perosh and Elvis Sinosic want to thank all the competitors, referees and officials, volunteers, spectators and sponsors for a great event. Events BJJ would also like to mention their sponsors Keiko Raca Kimonos and Striking Shots Photography. Congratulations to all the competitors who won their Divisions!
